Apollo Moon Landing to be Subject of Nov. 18 Observatory Open House at Guilford

The Cline Observatory at Guilford will hold its third open house of the school year on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Don Smith, an assistant professor of physics, will present “We DID Go to the Moon,” followed by a viewing of the moon through the observatory’s telescope, weather permitting.

Nearly 40 years after Neil Armstrong became the first human being to set foot on the moon, polls show that as many as 20 per cent of Americans have doubts about whether the landing was faked. Smith will give a short presentation on the history of the Apollo program and briefly show why the primary arguments given against the veracity of the moon landing do not hold up to scrutiny.

The observatory’s programs will continue Sunday, Dec. 2, with a presentation on the Geminids Meteor Shower.

The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Thom Espinola, Glaxo Wellcome Professor of Physics, at 336-316-2193 or tespinol@guilford.edu.

PARKING INFORMATION: Enter campus from the Arcadia Drive entrance off New Garden Road. The building directly in front of you (with the observatory dome) is the Frank Family Science Center. Park in either adjacent lot and walk to the auditorium entrance to the building which faces campus, away from New Garden Road.
