Newsweek Names Early College One of Nation’s Best High Schools

For the second year in a row, The Early College at Guilford was again named one of America’s best public high schools in Newsweek magazine’s annual survey of 1,300 schools. The Early College is listed 21st, making it the highest-ranked North Carolina high school. Only four other North Carolina schools appeared in the top 100.

Newsweek ranks schools according to academic rigor, using a ratio of the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in the previous year divided by the number of graduating seniors. According to the magazine, this “Challenge Index” is a better indicator of a school’s academic quality than raw test scores.

Last year, The Early College was also ranked highest of the five North Carolina schools that appeared on Newsweek’s list.

The Early College at Guilford was established in the fall of 2002 through a public-private partnership between Guilford County Schools and Guilford College to provide advanced learners with a quality education in a supportive learning environment. It was the first Early College founded in North Carolina. In the 2007-08 school year, 194 students were enrolled.
