McMichael Gift to Support Scholarship Fund and New Tennis Courts at Guilford
Dalton L. “Mac” McMichael Jr. and his wife, Susan, have made a gift of over $450,000 to Guilford to support a scholarship fund in memory of Mac’s mother, Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael, and be used toward construction of new tennis courts at the college.
A portion of McMichael’s gift will support the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael Scholarship, which was established in 1994. The scholarship fund provides assistance for needy and deserving students with preference given to those from Rockingham County, N.C.
The remainder of the gift will be used toward construction of the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael ’37 Centennial Class Tennis Courts on campus. Presently, the college has eight tennis courts that are in need of improvement.
“With gracious support from thoughtful people like Mac, Guilford students are able to afford to attend college as well as sustain a healthy and vigorous lifestyle,” said Kent Chabotar, president and professor of political science. “At the same time, Mac has honored his mother in a deep and meaningful way that will touch young lives for many, many years.”
Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael was a member of the Class of 1937, which graduated 100 years after Guilford was founded as the New Garden Boarding School. She majored in English and participated in student government. Her sister, Ruth Burton, and three nieces also graduated from the college.
Mac McMichael has served as a Guilford trustee since 1994. He is president of McMichael Mills Inc. of Madison, N.C., manufacturers of elastic yarns.
