Maddie Kaplan’s Photo One to Compete at Film Festival

Maddie Kaplan ’10 will be among the filmmakers showcased at the inaugural Gate City Women’s Film Festival, presented at Bennett College’s Little Theatre on March 14-15. Kaplan completed her short film Photo One in the spring 2007 narrative filmmaking course; the film premiered at Guilford’s Homegrown Film Festival last April.

Kaplan’s participation marks the first time a current Guilford student has competed in a juried film festival. She is an international studies major, with concentrations in criminal justice and English/writing.

The Gate City Women’s Film Festival celebrates the often overlooked accomplishments of women in film. Competition films will be screened beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Other events include a lecture on Julie Dash, whose 1991 film Daughters of the Dust was the first movie by an African-American woman to have wide release in the United States; a director-editor dialogue; and filmmaker panel discussions.

General admission is $5 and $2 for students. Visit www.myspace.com/gatecityfilmfest for more information.
