Professor and Author Elliot Engel to Give Bicentennial Talk on O.Henry at Guilford April 1

Elliot EngelElliot Engel, a professor, author and popular lecturer will give a talk on the life of noted author and Greensboro native O.Henry Tuesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Dana Auditorium. The talk is an affiliated event in Greensboro’s bicentennial celebration, and is presented in partnership with Our State magazine.

O.Henry is the pen name of William Sydney Porter, who was born in Greensboro Sept.11, 1862. His 400 short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, characterization and the clever use of twist endings.  Among the most notable are “The Gift of the Magi” and “Ransom of Red Chief.”  Porter moved away from Greensboro at the age of 20 and died in 1910.  He is buried in Asheville, N.C.

An Indianapolis, Ind., native, Engel lives in Raleigh, N.C., and has taught at N.C. State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.  He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA he won the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition, for his scholarship and teaching, he has received North Carolina’s Adult Education Award, N.C. State’s Distinguished Outreach Professorship and the Victorian Society Award of Merit.

Engel has published seven books in England and the United States. His articles have appeared in national magazines, including Newsweek.  He has written three plays that have been produced during the last five years. PBS television stations around the country aired Engel’s mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens.
