"The Business of Being Born" to be Screened Jan. 26-27
On Jan. 26-27, the women’s studies program will present a series of events examining issues of maternity care in the United States, including special benefit screenings of the controversial new documentary film “The Business of Being Born.”
The New York Times called “The Business of Being Born” a “passionate ground-level examination of home childbirth.” Filmmaker Abby Epstein’s examination of how women deliver babies intersperses real-life stories with political and scientific insights into the development of the modern American maternity care system.
The film screenings will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 27 at 3:30 p.m. A silent auction will begin two hours before each screening.
In addition, at 3 p.m. on Sunday there will be a parade of “caught” children (delivered by midwives). A panel discussion on maternity care and home birth will follow the Sunday screening.
All events will take place in Joseph Bryan Jr. Auditorium, located in the Frank Family Science Center. Donations of $5 are suggested, with proceeds benefiting the North Carolina Friends of Midwives.
