Six art students will present their capstone projects in the annual Senior Thesis Art exhibition, running April 24-May 8 in the Founders Hall Gallery and Commons. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 24 from 7-9 p.m. in the gallery.
All six artists explore the idea of interactions in their work, ranging from symbolic and metaphorical relationships among forms to more explicit human interplay and dialogue. The six students in the exhibition and their areas of specialization are:
-
Anna Campbell (Greensboro, N.C.) – A candidate for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture, Campbell is the recipient of the 2008 and 2009 Merry Moor Winnett Art Scholarship for sculpture and the Center for Continuing Education Outstanding Achievement in Art Award. -
Susannah Goodman (Detroit, Mich.) – A Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate in ceramics, Goodman’s work includes both sculptural and functional ceramic objects. Her wood-fired stoneware vessels evoke human interaction through biomorphic lines, bulbous forms and dynamic shifts in scale. She is an Honors Scholar at Guilford and is the recipient of the Nereus C. English Trust Award, and has previously exhibited in the Annual Guilford College Juried Student Art Show (2005-2008) and in the UGA Studies Abroad Exhibitions in both Athens, Ga., and Cortona, Italy.
-
Julia Harmon (Oviedo, Fla.) – In her oil-on-canvas portraits of her fellow thesis students, Harmon portrays her subjects during the art-making process. She has exhibited regularly in the Annual Guilford College Juried Student Art Show and in 2008 was awarded first prize for painting.
-
Amy Keilbaugh (Philadelphia, Pa.) – A candidate Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking, Keilbaugh’s woodcut reduction prints and monoprints explore internal dream imagery and the idea of healing. She is the recipient of the 2008-09 Merry Moor Winnett Scholarship and exhibited in the Annual Guilford College Juried Student Art Show in 2006 and 2008.
-
Lucinda Rowe (Lexington, Va.) – a BFA candidate in drawing, Rowe’s surreal drawings are about imagined and idealized interactions with nature. She was awarded the James S. Laing Art Award by the art department in 2008. She has exhibited regularly in the Annual Guilford College Juried Student Art Show, winning first-place awards for drawing in 2008, two-dimensional design in 2005 and an honorable mention in drawing in 2006.
- Bryan Stacy (Greensboro, N.C.) – A BFA candidate in printmaking, Stacy’s mixed media paintings address glorification of war and aggression. He has completed multiple public and private installations throughout North Carolina, and received awards in printmaking and two-dimensional design for the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Annual Guilford College Juried Student Art Show.
To participate in the optional honors Senior Thesis Exhibition, students must apply in their junior year and have at least a 3.25 GPA in art. Selected students partake in a rigorous program of independent work, group critiques and a required professional practices course, which culminates in their final group exhibition.
