Guilford Competes in “Soup Bowl” for Local Food Banks
When cross-town rivals Guilford College and Greensboro College meet for the Sept. 6 football game at Armfield Athletic Center, the action on the field won’t be the only competition. The two schools are also challenged to see which can collect the most cans of food in the 12th annual Gate City Soup Bowl.
Admission to the game is two cans of food per person. Each school is also collecting cans and monetary contributions leading up to the game. Guilford will collect pre-game donations through Thursday, Sept. 4.
The Soup Bowl benefits Servant Center, Greensboro’s largest food bank, and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Greensboro College won last year’s competition, which collected almost 8,300 cans.
There are 16 donation boxes distributed throughout Guilford’s campus, each decorated with statistics about hunger. Residence halls and student organizations will also accept donations.
