President Calls College Community's Attention to Bias Incident Group
Submitted By: Ty Buckner
Top of Page
The Bias Incident Group was established in 2003 to respond to acts of bias that violate the ideals of the college and impede freedom of expression.

The group's role is to respond to anonymous defacements, graffiti or other hateful expressions against campus groups motivated by race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ancestry, national origin, or physical or mental disability -- when Public Safety or Campus Life cannot immediately identify the perpetrators -- that the college must not permit to be the last word.

The group consists of faculty members, students and staff drawn from the college community. It meets at the call of President KENT CHABOTAR. In order to concentrate on the most serious incidents and capture the attention of the campus community, an incident must have four characteristics in order to convene the Bias Incident Group:

Besides being (1) serious and (2) perpetrated by anonymous persons, the incident should also be (3) public and widely known as well as (4) viewed as clearly threatening to a person or group. In extraordinary circumstances, the president will waive one or more of these characteristics if the incident seems to be part of a pattern of unacceptable behavior.

On such occasions, the Bias Incident Group convenes itself to affirm the values of the college, call upon the campus community to stand against these acts, and consider other appropriate responses.

Men's Basketball Team Picked First In ODAC Poll
Submitted By: Dave Walters

The men's basketball team was selected first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason poll. The Quakers received 93 points, including five first-place nominations. Virginia Wesleyan, who knocked Guilford out of last year's NCAA Division III quarterfinals, placed second with 88 points and three first-place votes.

Fifth-year head coach TOM PALOMBO returns three starters and 11 letter winners from last year's 24-5 team, including BEN STRONG '08. The 6-11 center was selected as The Sporting News and DIII News preseason National Division III Player of the Year. Strong is back after winning the National Association of Basketball Coaches Co-Player of the Year and the D3hoops.com Player of the Year awards. Strong averaged 25.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in Guilford's best season since 1974-75.

Palombo also returns CALEB KIMBROUGH '08 and ERIC BELKOSKI '08. Kimbrough, a three-year starter, has improved each year and consistently ranks among the ODAC leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio. Belkoski is a 6-3 forward who brings toughness and hustle to the post. He showed an improved scoring touch as a junior, averaging 8.4 points per game.

Forward GEORGE NEVILLE '09 and 6-10 center TYLER SANBORN '10 return to provide frontcourt depth and insurance. RAY EDMOND '08, a defensive specialist on the perimeter, appeared in all 29 games with Neville and Sanborn.

Guilford plays a largely regional schedule again, including two regular-season ODAC games with Virginia Wesleyan, the 2006-07 national runner-up. The Marlins took all three meetings with Guilford last year and have ended the Quakers' season in each of the past three years. Hampden-Sydney, another ODAC team in last year's NCAA playoffs, is another tough league rival. Nonconference contests with Emory, Greensboro, Averett and Methodist will also help determine regional supremacy.

Palombo's 2006-07 Quakers had their best record in over 30 years and their first NCAA Division III playoff appearance. Guilford won a school-record 15 ODAC games and earned the second seed for the league's eight-team tournament, also an all-time high. The Quakers open the season with a Nov. 5 exhibition game at the University of South Carolina. The Division I Gamecocks are coached by DAVE ODOM '65.

Jonathan WadeJONATHAN WADE '11 won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week Award. Wade, the second Quaker to earn the honor this season, also picked up Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week prize, presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Wade led the Quakers at the Oglethorpe Fall Invitational in Oakwood, Ga., by finishing first in a 63-student field Oct. 22-23. He shot a five-under-par 137 (72-65) and helped the Quakers place first among 12 teams. Wade, who won his first college medalist crown, shot a six-under 65 in the second round, the second-lowest round in school history. His 36-hole 137 also matches the third-lowest score in Guilford history. The performance marked his second top-10 finish this season. Wade's team-leading stroke average of 72.44 in nine rounds ranks second in the ODAC.

The Oglethorpe Invitational marked Guilford's second top-five finish this season. Coach JACK JENSEN'S
club knocked off eight teams ranked in the Oct. 17 Nike Golf/Golf World Division III Coaches' Poll, including top-ranked Methodist and second ranked Oglethorpe. The Quakers, who are ranked third, kick off the spring season with the Pine Needles Intercollegiate Tournament Feb. 25-26 in Southern Pines, N.C.

Women's Swimming Picked Sixth in ODAC Poll

Steve KaczmarekOld Dominion Athletic Conference swimming coaches picked Guilford sixth in the league's preseason poll. Washington and Lee received six first place nods and 62 votes to narrowly edge out Randolph-Macon, the defending ODAC champion, in the eight-team poll.

Head coach STEVE KACZMAREK (right) returns six letter winners from last year's squad that set nine school records during the season. Guilford looks to overcome the loss of seniors KATE TALBOT '07 and NIKKI MALLMANN '07, who helped anchor the team during its first three years. However the Quakers still return a strong group of swimmers, including captains GENEVIEVE HOLMES '08, MELISSA NARRO '08, and AMANDA OEHLERT '08, who will be the Quakers' first four-year letter winners in swimming. Oehlert and Holmes each spent a semester abroad last season and competed in just half of the season. JUSTINE MERRITT returns as Guilford's top swimmer from 2006-07. She set six (five individual and one relay) of the nine school records that were broken during the record season for the Quakers.

Guilford opens the year on the road Nov. 4, at defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon along with Randolph in a dual meet. The Quakers' first home meet is Nov. 17, against ODAC newcomer Bridgewater in the Ragan-Brown Field House Pool.

This year's ODAC Championship is slated for Feb. 22-24, at the Dedmon Center on the campus of Radford (Va.) University.
