Guilford is one of a handful of area independent colleges taking part in an energy assessment program sponsored by North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). As part of the program, Peter Deng-Bul ’09 will work with Sustainability Coordinator Jim Dees to conduct a survey of Guilford’s energy output.
The NCICU program will create energy benchmarks that Guilford can then use to compare its energy usage with that of other small independent colleges, Dees says.
“It will give us a good indication of where we stand. And the comparison will be valid because we’re not comparing ourselves to a school in New Hampshire, or Arizona. We’re all buying our power from Duke Energy,” he says.
Nine other North Carolina independent colleges will participate in the program, with each school’s intern receiving a $3,200 stipend for the year-long position.
In addition, Advanced Energy Corporation, the nonprofit group that will help NCICU administer the grants, will demonstrate an energy audit of a building on each participating campus.
Deng-Bul, a native of Sudan, will graduate in May with a major in business and minor concentrations in political science and economics.
