Odom Retires as University of South Carolina Basketball Coach
Several alumni made the trip to Columbia, S.C., to support Dave Odom ’65 in his final game as head coach of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks men’s basketball team on Feb. 27. They included Elwood Parker ’64 (pictured with Odom), wife Ellen Parker ’64, Brooks Haworth ’62, Paul and Ruth Updegraff ’64, Mickey and Angie Faulk ’64, David ’63 and Kay Wells ’64, Jack and Judy Holley ’63, Buddy Dixon ’64 and Ray Durham ’62.
Searching for a Mystery Artist
As part of her work in the Office of Advancement, Gertrude Beal uncovers all sorts of facts, the details of which would be lost if not for her. She’s a walking encyclopedia of Guilford alumni, former faculty and staff and friends. But there’s one mystery even she hasn’t been able to solve.
“I have a painting of Founders Hall first owned by [late admission director] Charlie Hendricks ’40,” Beal says. “Charlie gave it to Leslie Daisy [a former advancement office staffer] and, when she left the college, she asked me if I would like to have it for my office. I would like to know who painted it.
“The signature on the painting is ‘L. Burch 1966.’ Was it done by a former student or staff member? Or was it perhaps done by the parent of a student? It is a nice likeness of Old Founders Hall showing the flagstone path in front of the building.”

2007 Golden Circle Inductees
Alumni from the Class of 1957 celebrated their 50th reunion at Homecoming Weekend, held Oct. 26-28, 2007. These newest members of the Golden Circle (alumni graduating 50 or more years ago) each received a medallion with an engraving of the college seal.
