QVS is a program supporting volunteers to follow their leadings for work for peace, justice and community, within a framework of Quaker spirituality. The program is organized by the Quaker Volunteer Service Committee, with support from 57th Street Meeting of Friends in Chicago and other Friends Meetings. Quaker Volunteers serve for one year with community-based organizations (or in other service arrangements), doing some mix of peace and justice work and community building as they are led by the spirit, with the guidance and support of the meeting. Volunteers will share quarters, living in community in Quaker House. As needed, volunteers will receive room and board, health insurance, a small expense stipend, transportation to Chicago at the beginning of the year of service and home at the end, orientation to the city, as well as local public transportation costs. In addition, 57th Street Meeting will provide: assistance in finding and engaging with a community-based organization or other arrangement for the placement, regular spiritual support and guidance through the Quaker Volunteer Service Committee, connections with other volunteers in the area, and fellowship with members and attenders of the Meeting. All applicants must be 21 years of age or older, and generally will have a college degree or specialized skills that can benefit the community. Applications for QVS should include: a completed application cover sheet (available at www.Quakervolunteers.org/QVSApplication.pdf), a typed introduction to the applicant's life experience and spiritual journey (approximately 2-3 pages), three letters of reference including a letter of support from the applicant's local Meeting, and a detailed statement of the applicant's experience of the leading to service (approximately 2-3 pages). All materials should be submitted to QVSC, c/o 57th Street Meeting of Friends, 5615 S. Woodlawn, Chicago, IL 60637. Looking for college students to serve as Group Leaders during our Service Learning Impacting Citizenship Camp (SLICC). SLICC is an effort to empower local high school students to impact their community as engaged and informed citizens. In 2009, SLICC campers will explore how agriculture and hunger issues affect our community. Each Grou pLeader will lead a team of up to ten high school students through educational activities, volunteer service, and reflection activities. Group Leaders will receive training and supervision from The Volunteer Center staff. Group Leaders and campers will volunteer at various nonprofit agencies. SLICC is scheduled for Monday, August 3rd through Friday, August 7th. The camp's headquarters will be located at The University of NC at Greensboro. Group Leaders are required to attend camp orientation and training on Saturday, July 18th and Saturday, July 25th from 9am-5pm. Each Group Leader will receive at least $200 stipend. Group Leaders need to have their own transportation to and from the camp's headquarters. Bus transportation will be provided to and from nonprofit agencies. A volunteer camp counselor is paired with a camper, and the counselor assists the camper throughout the day, in all activities. The goal of the volunteer is to support campers in their adjustment to camp in a manner consistent with the standards of Muscular Dystrophy Association. Must be 18 years of age and in good health with no major medical problems. Camp Counselors must be physically able to lift a young person between the ages of 6 and 21. Counselors help with daily activities such as feeding, bathing, dressing, and in recreational activities such as arts, crafts, swimming and horseback riding.
