Summer 2009 Student Cadre Program

Applications are available in Founders Hall – Campus Life and Info Desk, Hendricks Hall, main lobby of New Garden Hall, Student Financial Services in the basement of New Garden Hall, Conferences & Events in Bauman B-14 and the Facilities offices behind the Mail/Print Services building. Please complete your applications noting your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice, attach your resume and return to Jen Agor in Campus Life, 2nd floor of Founders Hall. The deadline to submit is on or before MARCH 20, 2009. The department managers will contact you between March 30 - April 7, 2009 to set up an interview. Department managers will notify you whether or not you have been selected for the program position by April 7, 2009.

Academic (Learning Commons) Receptionist 1 position
Individual will act as receptionist and office manager for the Learning Commons. Schedule students for tutoring and disability services sessions, fulfill students’ peer tutoring requests, work on long term projects (handouts, data entry on Access and Excel), as well as help with assistive technology and test administration for students with disabilities, and work collaboratively with staff to provide the most seamless services possible. Requirements include strong organizational skills, working knowledge of MS Office applications, creativity in problem solving, punctuality, dependability, knowledge of campus resources, ability to maintain confidentiality, strong communication skills (oral and written), as well as sensitivity to fellow students’ learning differences and other issues that impact leaning.

Advancement (Advancement) Clerical Assistant 1 position
The position will require the assistant to perform a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) filing, data entry, large mailings, scanning, clerical duties, answering phones, copying, assorted errands and special projects as assigned. The position will work with all areas of Advancement. Requirements: basic computer skills, experience with Microsoft Office is helpful; keyboard typing – accuracy much more important than speed; filing - alphabetizing and organizing chronologically; attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Candidate must have a professional manner and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks. Neat dress required.

Athletics (Athletics) Student Assistant 1 position
Work on summer projects including: hometown press releases for spring sport student-athletes, update record books, coordinate the mailing and receipt of sports information questionnaires to incoming student-athletes, assist in production of media guides for upcoming year. May include writing, web page maintenance and creation, research, archiving and publication layout and design. Must have good communication skills – oral and written, basic understanding of MS Office, personable disposition and upstanding character, basic understanding of athletics. Prefer someone with knowledge of Adobe PageMaker and PhotoShop.

Campus Life (Student Health) Health Assistant 1 position
The candidate will pick up mail and check records for compliance. If non compliance is found, the candidate will contact students via email or mail. Data entry is required. Candidate must complete work in a timely fashion, monitor phone calls, faxes and emails received by the Student Health Center. The candidate must possess computer skills to enter data. Must be able to screen and enter numerous immunization records. They will pick up and process mail and faxes daily, make copies and answer phones. Student must be trustworthy, polite, punctual, dependable, and flexible, follow confidentiality laws and state law requirements for immunization, have good computer skills and have knowledge of how the Health Center operates. Ability to work independently, with minimum direction and to multi-task would be an asset.

Career & Community Learning (Career Services) Program Assistant 1 position
Candidate will maintain job listings notebooks, organize, re-shelf and re-file career library materials. Assist with mailings to employers and students. Provide office coverage to assist visitors to Career Center and answer phones when needed. Receive and process job listings sent by employers (by phone, mail, and fax). Special projects will include assistance with web enhancements, including employer links and update employer database. Manage and distribute childcare list to community members. Process student registration forms and obtain e-mail addresses of students for registration. Restock handouts, brochures, etc. Assemble senior packets and assist with other office duties. Must have effective customer service orientation/attitude, superior organizational skills and interpersonal skills. Good attention to detail, well-organized, and ability to work in a team environment, but able to work independently, as well. Have polite and professional phone manner (training provided) and ability to learn simple data entry methods (training and supervision provided). Some experience with publishing software and Excel preferred.

CCE (CCE) Office Assistant 1 position
Position supports staff with filing, typing, answering phones, retrieving and delivering materials from other departments, greeting visitors, making posters, bulletin boards, scheduling appointments, special projects, assisting with mailings and general office duties as assigned. Individual should be reliable, have a professional attitude, attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, possess basic computer skills and have the ability to multitask.

Enrollment (Admission) Student Assistant 4 position
Student Assistants give campus tours to prospective students, their families, and other group visitors to campus. They also perform general office duties including but not limited to filing, data entry, receptionist duties, processing mail, and light word-processing. Student Assistants may expect to give up to 4 tours daily. Must be personable, a self starter & motivated, have general office skills and good communication skills, be an excellent listener, possess the ability to maintain confidentiality, be a good team player, dependable and able to follow directions, and enthusiastic about Guilford and willing to share that enthusiasm.

Hege Library (Circulation) Circulation Assistant 1 position
Assist with opening and closing the library, maintain service and help maintain equipment. Assist library patrons using the collection, finding books and materials. Check books in and out, lend Reserve materials, collect fines, and collect money for copier and fax use. Answer the telephone and in-person inquiries. Direct patrons to the correct locations in the library and other areas of campus. Shelve books, search for lost materials, and work on a variety of special summer projects. Must be dependable, have a clear understanding of alphabetical arrangement, understand whole and decimal numbers, be able to handle money and give change, be able to lift books, be friendly and courteous, be honest and service-oriented. Individuals need to be willing to respect the rules and policies of the library. Applicants must be able to work some nights and weekends.

Hege Library (Friends/Hege Library) Processing Assistant 1 position
This position involves processing all new materials for Hege Library, assisting in the repair and maintenance of current materials and assisting in processing of collections and other routine tasks in the Friends Historical Collection. The individual will have responsibility for ensuring that all books are properly stamped, have call numbers properly affixed and are bar-coded to the correct record. It involves working with the library’s database which is shared with four other libraries. The student will use the library’s inventory program and produce computer generated spine labels. Manuscript and other archival materials are cared for under the direction of the Friends Historical Collection Librarian. The position also involves some data entry, scanning and basic office tasks such as filing. Applicant will possess attention to detail, good organizational skills and ability to proofread with care, legible handwriting, familiarity with computers, especially MS Office applications, be capable of lifting heavy boxes of documents and books. Must be comfortable working on long-term projects without direct supervision.

IT&S (ITS-Tech) Technicians 9 position
The IT Technicians will be responsible for variety of duties including providing an initial point of contact for phone and walk-in requests at the IT&S Help Desk. These students will be responsible for solving first level issues (and some second level issues) and routing issues that they cannot resolve to the appropriate IT&S staff. The IT Technicians are also responsible for helping students using the computer labs in Bauman and may assist others in the Guilford community as well. IT Technicians will coordinate requests for multimedia equipment and deliver and setup requested equipment to the designated location. They will also assist the ITS staff in imaging and deploying new PC and Mac computers scheduled for delivery during the summer. They will be responsible for assisting campus wide with troubleshooting phone lines, network connections and cable TV (coax) connections that are experiencing trouble and repairing those when possible. IT Technicians performing web application development should have a working knowledge of cross-browser HTML, coding familiarity with PHP, ColdFusion, MySQL and MS Access. Working in a team environment and meeting scheduled deadlines is a must. Students who work with IT&S during the summer will have the opportunity to learn about how information technology is provided and supported at Guilford College. Candidate must have excellent telephone, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with a broad constituency of end-users with varying needs and experience; excellent customer-service attitude; a good sense of humor. Must be highly organized and detail-oriented; able to work in a team environment; be able to complete tasks by their assigned deadlines. Must have strong working knowledge of the Guilford College network; strong working knowledge of PC and MAC system hardware and software (Windows XP and Mac OSX); strong working knowledge of college standard software (Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, Internet Explorer, etc.). Must be able to lift 50 pounds. For those interested in web application development, must have working knowledge of cross-browser HTML coding, previous experience building web pages and must be familiar with the basic tools used in Web development, PHP, ColdFusion, MySQL and MS Access.

Operations & Facilities (Conferences & Events) Conference Coordinator 4 position
Coordinators will provide support for the summer camps and conference programs as front-line contacts for clients and guests. They will assist with event management including logistics, customer service and evaluation. It will be necessary to live on campus and they will need to work nights and week-ends as needed as well as during the day; they will have "on-call" responsibilities. Additional responsibilities, as needed, including staffing the Founders Hall Information Desk and responding to daily needs of conference attendees. These candidates must have excellent customer service skills, be flexible, attentive to detail and committed to excellence in all endeavors. The ideal candidate will also be a strong team player and have a great sense of humor. They must also need to be able to lift up to 30 lbs and be able to handle limited manual labor.

Operations & Facilities (Conferences & Events) Furniture Movers 4 position
Will be responsible for all residence hall furniture set ups, conference sets ups and moving projects as required. The successful furniture movers will have excellent customer service skills, be flexible, attentive to detail and committed to excellence in all endeavors. The ideal candidate must also be a strong team player and have a great sense of humor. The furniture movers must also be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs as the position is very physical labor intensive.

Operations & Facilities (Environmental Services) Housekeeping Asst. 5 position
Responsibilities will include assisting housekeeping staff with cleaning and restoring the dorms for summer conferencing and return of students by cleaning campus buildings (sweeping and mopping floors, dusting, scrubbing floors, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.; washing furniture, plastic cushions, bathroom fixtures, cleaning glass, etc.). Must be able to lift 40 lbs and be able to follow direct instructions and work well with existing staff. Most likely includes early morning hours.

Gather data from buildings, departments, and items such as manuals, vendor information, etc. Conduct data entry in CMMS system; perform filing duties, assist managers and staff as need with other duties as assigned. Must have knowledge of MS Office, and must provide friendly customer service.

Operations & Facilities (Landscape & Grounds) Groundskeeper 3 position
These candidates will assist and support the full-time employees in the Landscape & Grounds Department. Responsible for providing basic grounds maintenance activities such as weeding, mowing, edging, trash and litter management, watering, mulching, pruning, etc. Assist with project work including, but not limited to, planting and maintaining flower beds and other seasonal plantings, bed preparation, seeding, grading and athletic field maintenance. Individuals applying should enjoy outdoor work and be capable of working alone. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. A mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of general landscape practices will be helpful. The hours are between 7:00 am and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Operations & Facilities (Mail & Print Services) Mail & Delivery Assistant 1 position
This position will assist staff members with daily mail pick up, mail sorting, package log-in, distribution of mail and package slips to student mailboxes in Founders Mail Center. Log-in packages in the Mail & Print Services building; deliver packages to appropriate recipients on campus (obtaining a signature on the log sheet). Additional duties might include metering outgoing mail, assisting with bulk mail preparation or working in the print shop, time and need permitting. The candidate must work 5 days a week, 8:15 am to 2:15 pm, without lunch break or 8:15 am to 3:15 pm, with a lunch break. They must be able to lift heavy packages and mail flats, use a hand truck (dolly), drive a golf cart, and possess a personality that enjoys meeting and helping a variety of people.

These candidates will assist with inventory management, including database development and warehouse cleanout. They will periodically assist with the shipping and receiving department and safety department. Must have knowledge of computers, attention to detail and ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Operations & Facilities (Maintenance) Maintenance Tech Assistant 1 position
Candidate will be responsible for running supplies to maintenance technicians, to and from project areas. They will be learning the stock system to efficiently assist staff, assess campus lighting and changing light bulbs, cleaning and organizing project and/or work request areas, and assist maintenance technicians as needed. Individual will learn general knowledge and communications of the maintenance department. Candidates must have the ability to lift up to 50lbs, climb ladders, drive a golf cart and use basics tools (screwdrivers, wrench, etc.).
