Home State: North Carolina
Major: Chemistry

Class of 2012

The first time I drove through Guilford’s campus, I saw students on the lawn throwing a frisbee, and other students laying on blankets doing their homework. Everyone was smiling and seemed happy to be here. Now I am one of those smiling students on the quad on sunny afternoons.

I chose Guilford College after looking at countless other universities, small and large, public and private, in North Carolina and out of state. Guilford was the last school that I applied to, and to be honest I only applied to appease my family, but the first time I visited the campus, during our spring open house, Spring into Guilford, I was given a tour by a very knowledgeable tour guide, and then directed to a small information session about my intended major. Finally, after all my college searching, this was what I had been looking for, a school that really cares about me, as a person, not a number.

As a chemistry major who intends to teach, I’ve had some unique opportunities at Guilford. I’ve been a teacher’s assistant in the chemistry lab and classroom since my freshman year. This has given me the opportunity to observe and understand chemistry not only from the student’s perspective but also from the teacher’s point of view.

Academic opportunities aren’t the only thing I love about Guilford. I’ve been involved in the Guilford Christian Fellowship, which has allowed me to find friends who have similar interests as well as meet and get to know people with whom I have little in common. Guilford has helped to broaden my perspective on life and has taught me that being open-minded is an important part of growing, both academically and socially.
