Continuing Education Information
Adult students are subject to and supported by all of the academic and student life policies, except as otherwise indicated. While this special section has been created for the convenience of adult students enrolled at Guilford in academic programs through the Center for Continuing Education, there is valuable information throughout this handbook that CCE students should understand.
- Hendricks Hall. Hendricks Hall houses the Center for Continuing Education. A student lounge is available for studying, visiting, relaxing and participating in other CCE activities. A telephone for local calls, concession area and free coffee are available to CCE students. Office hours during fall and spring semesters are Monday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., for appointments. The lounge is available 8 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekdays when classes are in session.
- Campus Mail Service. New CCE students are assigned a mailbox in the canteen in Hendricks Hall and notified of their box numbers after registration each semester. Mailboxes receive important college communication with students, so students should check their mailboxes weekly for messages, information on campus activities, etc. The boxes are "open-faced" and not secure, so CCE students should not have federal mail sent to their campus address.
- Identification Cards. New students receive a free, four-year Student ID card, for identification, library use, entrance into some buildings and other campus uses, on registration day or during the first week of classes. Duplicate ID cards are made in the Office of Public Safety in the Bauman Telecommunications Center for a $15 replacement fee.
- Financial Assistance. Financial aid is available to qualified CCE students in the form of scholarships, loans, grants and part-time work through federal, state and institutional funding. Students who need assistance in meeting college expenses are urged to contact the CCE specialist in the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Planning who will assist them with completing all necessary forms to apply for the various available funds. Located on the second floor of New Garden Hall, that office is open from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and by special appointment. The phone number is 316-2410.
North Carolina residents working on their first undergraduate degree, who carry a minimum of 12 credit hours, automatically receive a credit to their account through the N.C. Legislative Tuition Grant.
- Dining Hall/Underground. The dining hall located in Founders Hall serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has discount cards available. A snack bar located in the Founders Hall lower level, is a casual place to meet and relax.
- Physical Education Center. CCE students wishing to make use of physical education facilities on campus may do so with the payment of a modest usage fee.
- CCE Student Activity Fee. CCE students are charged a $25 activities fee each semester of enrollment. This fee is administered by the CCE Student Government Association and pays for activities sponsored by that organization, including social events for students, families, faculty and staff and the annual awards ceremony. The fee also entitles CCE students to use the services of the Career and Community Learning Center and The Learning Commons. This fee does not cover services provided by Counseling Services and Student Health.
- Housing. CCE Students may not live in the residence halls.
CCE Academic Information
- General Education Requirements. All CCE and transfer students are subject to general education requirements established by the college.
- Graduation Requirements. All students graduating from Guilford must have completed a minimum of 128 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better. The only exception is for students who, on the advice of their advisers, have chosen the C Credit Accumulation Plan. See the college catalog for details. CCE students must apply for graduation by February 10 for May graduation, by May 31 for July graduation, by October 10 for December graduation.
- The Honor Code and Student Code of Conduct. All students are responsible for adherence to the Guilford social and academic codes and should refer to the academic regulations and student conduct sections of this Guilford College Student Handbook for complete information.
- Advising. Each newly enrolled CCE student is assigned a faculty adviser, usually from their academic major department, to guide and assist the student throughout the Guilford experience. Advisers may be changed by submitting a Change of Adviser Form to the Registrar's Office.
- Drop/Add Procedures. After registration day, students may change their registration by calling or scheduling an appointment with their faculty or CCE adviser. Students may add courses during the first week of classes. A grade of "W "will be received if a course is dropped by the dates shown on the Web page each semester -- usually just after the semester break. Rarely will a petition for a grade of "W " be approved beyond those dates.
- Refunds and Adjustments. Refunds and adjustments are based on enrollment in either the 16-week regular/intensive session or the eight-week Fast Track sessions. Withdrawal from Guilford is official only after a withdrawal petition is completed by CCE advisers and processed by the Registrar. If withdrawal occurs prior to the first day of classes, 100 percent of all tuition and fees are refunded. After the first day of classes the refund is based on U.S. Department of Education requirements. A refund schedule can be obtained from the Office of Student Accounts.
- Drop/Add Course Adjustments. Financial aid awards that require half-time or full-time enrollment for the term will be enforced in accordance with state and/or federal requirements.
- Regular and Intensive Enrollees. During the first 21 calendar days of the session, CCE students who remain enrolled at Guilford for at least 4 credit hours may obtain a full refund for courses dropped. No adjustments or refunds are made after the 21st day.
- Fast Track Enrollees. During the first 10 calendar days of the session, CCE students who remain enrolled at Guilford for at least 4 credit hours may obtain a full refund for courses dropped. No adjustments or refunds are made after the 10th day.
- Certificate of Study Program. The program consists of four to 10 courses in a clearly defined sequence in a specific field. It is designed for: (1) the person who seeks an organized and well-planned learning program, but does not wish to embark upon a complete bachelor's degree program, or (2) the person who has completed undergraduate studies in one area and does not wish to pursue a graduate degree, but who seeks to develop one or more strong additional areas of expertise. Information on the Certificate of Study program may be obtained from continuing education advisers.
- Academic Services. The The Learning Commons is available days and evenings by appointment to assist CCE students with academic difficulties, especially in reading, mathematics, expository writing, study and test-taking skills and time management. Peer tutoring also is available upon request. Departments provide students with accounting, foreign language and computer labs. Many other clubs, programs and services are available to assist students with their departmental studies. There are numerous computer terminals on campus for student use with the largest number located in the Bauman Telecommunications Center. The Bauman computer labs are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
- Hege Library. Hege Library offers a copy machine, study areas and individual and group instruction in library research methods and paper writing. Refer to the resource guide in this handbook for the hours of operation.
