Preparing for Your LC Appointment
- Plan ahead, and come early, well ahead of the due date! Last minute efforts are rarely productive, and it's usually impossible for us to serve you professionally. Give yourself time to develop and refine your ideas.
- Bring any relevant written assignments or notes to your conference.
- Bring papers at any stage: final drafts, exploratory drafts, really rough drafts, freewriting, ideas.....
- Remember that tutors should not proofread your papers. They may point out patterns of error and, with those errors in mind, teach, make suggestions, ask questions--but not simply correct.
- Have in mind a general sense of "what's wrong" and "what's right," having inventoried your strengths and weaknesses. Have specific questions for your tutor (and yourself).
- If you're coming for time management, bring a copy of your schedule and course syllabi with you.
- Set specific goals for your time with the tutor by completing these phrases:
- In this conference I hope to....
I feel most unsure about....
I would like for you to....
- As the conference progresses, keep your goals in mind. Voice them. Be open to tutors' suggestions; but, be confident in your own perspective, too. A tutor's suggestions are just that. Participate with us in shaping this conference. It's YOUR writing voice and YOUR choices that should guide your writing.
- Give us feedback--we want the LC to serve you well.
