Problems using Lotus Notes in Latest Version of Firefox
Update on November 30th, 2007: IT&S has made changes to the Lotus Notes mail servers to address this issue, and we believe this has been fixed. If you are still having problems using Lotus Notes in Firefox, please try restarting Firefox. If you are still having problems with Lotus in Firefox after restarting, please call the Help Desk at 336-316-2525, help@guilford.edu, or in person in Bauman 101.
IT&S has received many reports that there are problems using Lotus Notes over the web with the latest version of Firefox (2.0.0.10). Many customers are having problems sending emails or downloading attachments.
IT&S is actively working on this issue with the vendor to resolve the problem. In the meantime, here are some steps you can take if you are experiencing problems. We will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
If possible, we advise that you do not upgrade your Firefox browser until the issue has been fixed. If you have already upgraded your browser, here are your options:
Internet Explorer does not appear to be affected by this issue and is available as a temporary solution. If you have never used Internet Explorer before, you may have to configure certain parts of Internet Explorer in order for your email access to work properly. Click here for more information on configuring Internet Explorer.
If you only want to send email and do not need to download attachments, you can make a configuration change in Lotus to allow sending email to work successfully.
1. From your Lotus email on the web, select Preferences in the top right corner. This will open the Preferences window.
2. On the Preferences window, click the plus sign next to Mail and select General.
3. Under Save Sent Mail, select Always Keep a Copy.
4. Click OK at the bottom of the window to save your settings changes.
If you are a student, keep in mind that saving your email will take up more space. Make sure to keep track of your email quota (the green bar at the top of the window) and clean up your email if you are getting close to 100 percent space usage.
You also have the option of uninstalling the latest version of Firefox and reinstalling the version of Firefox from before the update. Please be cautious in doing so to make sure information like your bookmarks is not lost. We recommend making a copy of your browser information before taking this step. Your browser information (profile) is usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.default, where xxxxxxxx is a string of letters and numbers. More information is available on the Firefox site here. If you are not sure how to backup your profile, please call the Help Desk at 336-316-2525 for assistance.
To uninstall Firefox, go to the Start Menu, select Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs, select Mozilla Firefox from the list of programs, and click Remove on the right. Once the program has been removed, click here to download the Firefox installer.
After you have installed this version, make sure to change Firefox's settings so that it does not automatically upgrade to the latest version. To do so:
1. In Firefox, go to the Tools menu, and select Options.
2. In the Options window, click on Advanced at the top, and select the Updates tab.
3. Below "When Updates to Firefox are Found," make sure that Ask me what I want to do is selected, and then click OK at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
If Firefox asks you if you want to upgrade to the latest version, make sure to say no until this issue has been resolved.
Mac users can uninstall the new version of Firefox and install the version of Firefox from before the update. Please be cautious in doing so to make sure that information like your bookmarks is not lost. We recommend making a copy of your browser information before taking this step. Your browser information (profile) is located in your user folder ( ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/, where xxxxxxx is a string of letters and numbers.) More information is available on the Firefox site here. If you are not sure how to backup your profile, please call the Help Desk at 336-316-2525 for assistance.
To uninstall Firefox 2.0.0.10, drag the Firefox icon from your Applications folder to the Trash. Then click here to download Firefox 2.0.0.9 from Guilford's website.
After you have installed Firefox 2.0.0.9, make sure to change Firefox's settings so that it does not automatically upgrade to the latest version. To do so:
1. Go to the Firefox menu and select Preferences.
2. In the Preferences window, click on Advanced at the top, and select the Updates tab.
3. Below "When Updates to Firefox are Found", make sure that Ask me what I want to do is selected, and then click the red X in the top left to close the Preferences window.
If Firefox asks you if you want to upgrade to the latest version, make sure to say no until this issue has been resolved.
