Problems connecting to servers from Guilford Apple Computers
Many community members using Guilford College Apple computers are reporting problems connecting to Guilford servers (\\hobbs for staff, \\athena for faculty and classes, and \\students for students.)
This issue is only affecting Guilford-owned Apples; personal Apple laptops are able to connect successfully to these servers.
IT&S staff are continuing to work to fix the issue. In the meantime, we have identified a work-around to allow users on Guilford-owned Apples to connect to these servers.
1. Open your Macintosh hard drive (through Finder or the hard drive link on the desktop.)
2. Select the System Folder.
3. Select the Library Folder.
4. Select the CoreServices Folder.
5. Launch the program called Kerberos (not KerberosAgent.)
6. Once the Kerberos application launches, you should see a list of what Kerberos calls Tickets listed on the screen. Click the button at the top that says Destroy to erase your Kerberos tickets.
7. Close Kerberos.
Now you can connect to the server. From the top menu of your Finder, select Go and then Connect to Server. In the Connect to Server box, where it asks for the server address, type smb://hobbs or smb://athena or smb://students in order to connect to these servers. It will prompt you for your username and password, and then ask you which folder you want to connect to.
You can then get to the server as you did before. Note that if your Mac is set up with your share space linked in the dock, you will continue to see the blank question mark, but the steps listed above will help you get to your files in a different way until the problem is resolved.
If you have any questions or concerns or would like assistance in connecting to a server, please contact the IT&S Help Desk at 336-316-2525, help@guilford.edu, or in person in Bauman 101.
