A Message from President-Elect Jane Fernandes
I very much appreciate the warm welcomes and kind words I’ve received from all facets of the bright jewel that is the Guilford community. During the crucial transition period underway, I am particularly grateful for the efforts of Ed Winslow and Nancy Quaintance in forming two transition teams. The work of these teams will help me prepare in the short weeks ahead to hit the ground running on July 1. We have our work cut out for us and it is reassuring to know the teams are in place to begin moving that forward.
Jim and I and our daughter Erin are looking forward to moving to campus soon. Our son Sean will be interning in Raleigh in July and August, and he will join us on campus some weekends, we hope. We are all excited to learn more about the values that permeate life at Guilford. We’ve started reading books on the history and beliefs of the Society of Friends, and we are looking forward to learning how Guilford College’s culture and ways are shaped by that heritage.
Thank you for allowing my family and me the opportunity to embrace and be embraced by all that is good about Guilford College. We can’t wait to live here.
A Message from Board of Trustees Chair-Elect Ed Winslow
We are moving forward with the “transition” process to support Jane Fernandes as she assumes her role as our president. Our objectives are to introduce Jane to Guilford College, the Greensboro community and beyond (statewide and nationally) as our leader.
At the same time, Jane has much to learn about us. Much of her transition will consist of listening. We want to ensure that Jane has opportunities to hear from all important quarters.
We are creating two transition groups. They are (1) the Transition Committee of the Board of Trustees, which includes Nancy Quaintance, Carole Bruce, Hector McEachern, Pete Cross and Ed Winslow; and (2) the Guilford Community First Year Committee. Its members are:
• Faculty—Karen Spira (foreign languages) and Melanie Lee Brown (biology)
• Academic Affairs—James Shields ’00
• Communications & Marketing—Ty Buckner
• Admission—Grace Sullivan '14
• Advancement—Ellie Yearns
• Alumni Relations—Jerry Harrelson ’72
• Administration—Jon Varnell
• President’s Office—Joyce Eaton
• Quaker Life—Max Carter
• Finance—Eric Krpejs
• Local Government—Jeff Thigpen ’93
• Greensboro Community—Reid Phillips
• Student Life—Jen Agor
• Community Senate—Jose Oliva ’17
• CCE SGA—Monica Jones ’15
• Trustees— Nancy Quaintance
The First Year group will provide Jane with important College introductory information and opportunities to gain a greater understanding of the values and traditions of Guilford and the Quaker culture. In addition, the group will recommend a plan to maximize Jane’s engagement with students, faculty, staff, alumni and other key constituents—especially in her first year—and to communicate her story and Guilford’s story effectively.
The First Year Committee met for the first time May 15 and will meet periodically over the summer. It welcomes suggestions from faculty, staff and students about activities Jane should consider in her first year.
Nancy Quaintance will serve on the campus committee as well as the trustee Transition Committee and she will be a key leader in both groups. She is already exhibiting huge enthusiasm for this work and for advancing Guilford College. I encourage everyone to find opportunities to support and thank her for her service and leadership.
Thanks to everyone for helping to welcome Jane into the Guilford community and for supporting her in the work ahead.
